Robert Stops

Robert Lee Stops affectionally known as “Bobby Lee” made heaven his home on December 29, 2020 surrounded by his family.

He was the fifth of 10 children born to Ernestine (Bravo) and Arlie Stops Sr. on January 12, 1957 in Fort Worth, Texas. He was a direct descendent of Chief Pretty Eagle and a member of the Greasy Mouth Clan.

He was raised in Dallas, Texas before moving to Crow Agency, Montana in 1969 at the age of 12. He began his education in Dallas, Texas and continued his education at St. Xavier Mission, St. Labre Catholic School and graduated from Hardin High School in 1977. He obtained a degree in Theology in 2001. He was a lifelong member of St. Dennis Catholic Parish in Crow Agency. Bobby Lee started working at the Westmoreland Absaloka (Sarpy) Mine at the age of 18 and retired after 40 years of service.

In his younger years, he competed state wide in 5K and 10K races. He enjoyed family gatherings and you would always catch him cooking at the grill. He was a good artist and enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Cubs. He was always called upon to pray or put holy oil on family and friends. He has many Godchildren.

Bobby Lee was preceded in death by his mother, Ernestine Bravo Stops; his maternal grandparents, Salvador and Irene (Sotelo) Bravo; his paternal grandparents, Dorothy Big Lake Stops Hugs and John Stops; his aunts, Verna Hugs Rogers, Violet Hugs, Rogelia Rosales, Hope Hernandez, Gloria Medina, Amada Saenz and Sandy Bravo; his uncles and namesakes, Robert Stops and Robert Bravo, Salvador Bravo Jr. and Frank Chairez; and his niece, Jessie Marie Rodriguez.

He is survived by his father Arlie Stops Sr., his loving wife of 36 years, Sandra Lee; his children, Erica Lee (Franco) Little Light, John Robert Lee (J.R. Lee), Glenn, Bailey, Ty (Shalimar), Diamond Jade and Sandro Stops; his adopted daughter, Tommi Jo Stewart; his adopted sons Wacey (Tawny) and Cyle Lane (Leslie) Black Eagle; his 18 grandchildren, R’Lee Ray (Dacinda), Ernestine Kaya, Thaisonn, Khalyjah, Cadence, Phoenix Danger, Amaya, Avaya, Brooklyn, Hudson, DalonZo, Kambre, Mataya, Baby Diamond, Asriel, Ty Jr., Kyran and Harold James; Chesney Bird had a special place in his heart; his aunts, Deanna Stops at Pretty Camps, Rose (Steve) Chesarek, Clara Hugs, Beldean (Blaine) Small; his uncles, Joseph Bear Cloud, Elias (Theo), L.T. (Tammi) Hugs; maternal aunt, Irene Duran, of Dallas, Texas; maternal uncle, Rudy Sotelo, of Dallas, Texas; his siblings, Theresa Mason, Gloria (Rudolph) Martinez, Dr. Arlie John Stops Jr., Deanna (Terry) Dennis, Glenda (Marvin) Dawes Sr., Duawayne, Michael (Denise) Ardie (Julie) and Charlie (Theresa) Stops; his sisters-in-law, Pinky Bird, whom he called Pink, Linda (Gary) Howie, Melissa (Sonny) Falls Down, Sweetheart Carpenter and Tara (CJ) Stewart; and his brother-in-law, Tommy (Mildred) Carpenter.

His extended family includes the Stops family, Agnes Stops Pretty on Top family, Mary Agnes Shane family, Christine Stops Stewart family, Deanna Stops Milda family, Edna Stops Hill family, Hartford Bear Claw family, Gertrude Bear Crane family, Locke/Iron Cloud family from Porcupine, South Dakota, Bravo, Sotelo and Chairez family from Texas and all of the descendants of Chief Pretty Eagle, as well as his adopted sisters, Annie Snell, Ursula (Barry Russell) Rides Horse and Bobaleen Red Star and his adopted brothers, Glenn (Rhonda) Elhard and Clinton Walks.

The family would like to thank Julie Stops who frequently visited her brother-in-law while he was in the hospital and unable to have visitors. We would also like to thank the staff of the ICU and CVU departments at the Billings Clinic for their dedication and care of our loved one. How beautiful it must have been for a favorite son-in-law (Bobby) to escort Auntie Caroline into heaven.

Our family is large; if we have missed you, please accept our apology. Bobby Lee was blessed with a large and extended family. We appreciate the love, support and prayers said for him and our family.

Graveside service was on January 4, 2021 at the Fairview Cemetery in Hardin.

Bullis Mortuary was entrusted with the arrangements.
