Lyla ‘Jane’ Balmer

Thursday, November 1, 2018

Lyla “Jane” Balmer was born on Feb. 5, 1939 to Otto and Lydia Unverzagt in Hardin. She was reborn in the waters of Holy Baptism two months later on April 9, and confirmed in her Baptismal faith on May 12, 1953.

Jane attended Concordia Teacher’s College in Seward, Nebraska, where she earned her teaching certificate. She began teaching as a kindergarten and elementary school teacher, embarking on her lifelong passion: teaching children. In moving to Washington, she was not able to continue teaching, but turned to professional baking, being employed at the Poodle Dog Restaurant (in Fife, Washington) for the last 39 years. Still the teacher at heart, Jane raised her six children in the Christian faith.

Jane is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Alvin Unverzagt. Honoring and remembering her are her six children and their spouses: Noye (and Pam) Balmer/Nevil, Kara (and Peter) Condon, Laura (and Karsten) Hagen, Martin (and Benjamina) Balmer, Jayna (and Darrin) Paradise/Sanford, and Faith (and Greg) Miller; eight grandchildren: Lydia Hagen, William Balmer, Nathalie Paradise, Henry Hagen, Luke Balmer, Emmett Balmer, and twins Jack and Katherine Balmer; and nieces/nephews: Mickey Unverzagt, Alix (and Blair) Johnson, Patrice (and Mike) MacDonald, and Ken (and Nicole) Gore.

On Oct. 2, 2018, at the age of 79 years, seven months, three weeks and six days, Jane died, and her soul was lovingly taken to its eternal rest by her Savior God. Blessed be her memory.
