James Dahle Sr.

James “Jim” Dahle Sr., 86, passed away on Saturday, December 5, 2020 surrounded by his family, ending a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. We lost our father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and a friend to many.

Jim was born on February 17, 1934 to Ed and Adeline Dahle in Lame Deer, Montana, baby brother to Barbara Marie, Betty, Junior, and Edwin. In his younger years Jim and his family grew up in the Busby Creek area and attending schools in Hardin, graduating from Hardin High School in 1951. After high school he worked various jobs including helping his dad on the family ranch.

On January 2, 1953 he married the love of his life, June Pittman, in Lame Deer. They were blessed with three loving children, Dennis, James Jr. and Kimberly. In their early married years, they lived in Busby, Montana, owning and operating the Busby Store. Eventually, they moved to their piece of heaven on earth together, Muddy Creek, Montana, building their prized Black Angus cattle operation.

Our father was a life-long cowboy and was happiest being on horseback and working his cattle. He took great pride in his ZY ranch. He was well known for his generosity to all and could often be found helping his neighbors with riding, shipping and brandings.

Jim always started the day with at least one game of cribbage with his family and friends. In his younger years he was an avid bowler, card player and rodeo cowboy. As a member of the NRCA, he competed in team roping, calf roping and bulldogging events. In 1962, 1963 and 1964 he won the bulldogging category at the Crow Fair Rodeo.

Dad served on the Range Telephone Board for 33 years, traveling with his beloved wife and good friends to many conferences throughout the U.S. In addition to his service with Range Telephone, he served on the Northern Cheyenne Tribal Council for 12 years, was a past board member of the Cheyenne Western Bank and was a member of the Northern Cheyenne Livestock Association and chairman for eight years.

His greatest memories were spending time and traveling with his wife of 66 years, riding amongst his cattle herd, monitoring the cattle markets, playing cards, checking his Facebook page for the latest news and hanging out with his kids and grandkids.

Preceding him in death, is his beloved wife, June; parents Ed and Adeline Dahle; brother, Edwin; sister, Betty; brothers-in-law, Robert “Bob” Pittman, Mack Davidson, Alfred Braine and Willard Wilson; and special friends, Tuffy Ross and Lawrence Neiss.

James is survived by his children; sons Dennis (Teri) of Browning, Jimmy (Noelle) of Colstrip and daughter, Kim (Rey Paz) Dahle of Muddy Creek; grandchildren, Wacey, Nicole, Aryn, Connor, Katie, Breyden, Elena and Daniel; and great-grandchildren, Lucia and Jhett; his older sister, Barbara Marie Wilson; sisters-in-law, Ruby Braine and family and Donna Dahle and family; brothers-in-laws, Leland (Jeanette) Pittman and family and Bill Pittman and family; and special friends, Johnny Small, Leon Sioux, Art and Rita McDonald, OT and Henry Thompson, Judy Ross, Patricia Rowland, George and Georgia Bement, JC Bement, Jim Heiser, and his Range Telephone Family.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Northern Cheyenne Service Unit. Special thanks to nurses, Sable Kerzmann, Jennifer Magpie and Larna OldElk. We thank each of you for your prayers, presence, support and concern and apologize if we have mistakenly omitted anyone.

Graveside service will take place 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 10 at the Dahle Family Cemetery, Muddy Creek.

The family would like to ask his friends and family to bring their branding irons to the graveside service to brand his casket cover.

We ask that all attending follow the COVID-19 mask and social distancing guidelines.
