The May senior of the month is Helen Uffelman.

Helen Adeline Kirschenmann Uffelman was born on April 20, 1935 in Hardin to Emil and Elvina Kirschenmann and lived in the Dunmore area until the fall of 1950 when they moved to Hardin.

Helen writes that she graduated from Hardin High School in 1953. While in high school she sang in Miss Schuster’s Triple Trip for 4 years and at the Northwest Musical at Bellingham, Washington. She also worked for the telephone company part-time after school and weekends.

After graduation she worked for the Mutual of New York Life Insurances as a clerk-stenographer until February of 1955. She married Bill Uffelman on March 27, 1955 in Hardin.

She and Bill bought the farm where they made their home from Uncle Victor Nedens which had previously belonged to Bill’s grandparents, the Nedens’. They have bought and leased land around them.

Helen and Bill have four sons, Randy, Ken, Gary and Brian and four daughters-in-law, fifteen grandchildren and 6 greatgrandchildren.

After the boys started school she began to help in the field driving tractor and swathing hay.

They had a hog confinement for many years. Helen helped with the farrowing, vaccinating, cleaning and anything else that needed to be done.

After they closed the confinement they bought a time share and started to travel.

Helen loves to quilt, golf, play cards and games. She goes to as many sports events that the grandchildren are in as possible.

Helen’s love for music and talent continues and she is a past choir director at the E & R Church for many years and now plays the organ.

Helen’s portrait is on display at the Hardin Senior Center along with the Arbogast’s pictures of friends and fun at the Senior Center throughout the month.
