Hardin Middle School sixth graders win county spelling bee

Thirty-eight spellers from the local area participated in the 2018 Big Horn County Spelling Bee, held Feb. 21 at Hardin Middle School auditorium. Contest words included the likes of: “apparatchik,” “sesquicentennial,” “picaresque” and “moxibustion.”

The Big Horn County champion is Carmen Pallone, a sixth grader from Hardin Middle School. She is the daughter of Mario and Leigh Ann Pallone. The runner up is Chloe Baker, also a sixth grader from Hardin Middle School. She is the daughter of Able and Abbe Baker.

Participants were winners from their school spelling bee. These are students in grades 5-8 from Hardin, Fort Smith and Lodge Grass schools.

Carmen will advance to the Montana State Spelling Bee in Billings on March 17, held at Rocky Mountain College in Billings. The state winner will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee held in Washington D.C. in May.

The winning word was “sarcasm.”
