Hardin man faces two felony charges for sex crimes

A Hardin man was charged with one count of incest and one count of sexual assault on a victim less than 14 years old in Big Horn County Justice court last week.

Jose Mungia Valencia plead not guilty to both felony charges in Hardin, and faces a potential four years in prison for incest and four years in prison for sexual assault and fines of up to $100,000 if convicted.

Charging documents say Valencia sexually abused a female minor between 2014 and 2018.

The minor’s mother reported the alleged abuse on Oct. 21, and an investigation followed.

In a forensic interview conducted by investigators, the victim accused Valencia of touching her in an inappropriate sexual manner on multiple occasions.

She accused Valencia of abusing her starting when she was in fourth grade.

According to court documents the victim reported the abuse to her mother in 2018. The victim also told investigators she reported the abuse to her mother, who spoke to Valencia about it. She stated to investigators that shortly after that conversation took place the abuse stopped.

According to county officials, Valencia was arrested at Hardin Middle School on Oct. 25. He remains in the custody of the Big Horn County detention center.

Valencia’s bail was set at $75,000.
