BHC Library celebrates National Library Week

As I was driving home from Billings last week in blowing snow with the temperature in the teens, I thought to myself that in just a month we’ll be turning on the air conditioner. It’s been a crazy winter, but it’s starting to wind down and April is here. Hopefully, April will bring with it some milder weather. Cross your fingers.

This week, as it happens, is actually National Library Week, where we are celebrating libraries across the country and, specifically, the Big Horn County Library in Hardin.

Quite honestly, I am very proud of our library – a library that, while it is located in Hardin, serves the entirety of Big Horn County. Few communities the size of Hardin are able to have a library of this quality. Our collection of books and videos is second to none. In addition, the services offered are first rate.

Last month, the Big Horn County Library hosted the South Central Library Federation annual meeting for the first time ever, which in the library community of Montana was quite an honor. Last October, we hosted New York Times Bestselling author Craig Johnson. This month – in fact this very week – we will be hosting another bestselling author Tracie Peterson.

There was a time in history when information and literature was only available to those wealthy individuals who could afford it. Several developments changed that and public libraries are definitely one of those developments. It’s hard to imagine what the world would be like without public libraries.

If I may be so bold, I would encourage everyone to take stock of the wonderful facility we have here. It is worth celebrating this week as others around the country celebrate their own public libraries. If you haven’t been here in a while, make a point of stopping in and looking around, and helping us celebrate National Library Week.

Remember also to come in on Thursday, April 12 to see Tracie Peterson. Remember, she will have books available for purchase and also will sign them for you.

Be good to yourselves and each other.
