Ruth Benzel, who will be celebrating her 90th birthday this fall, receives a birthday cake at the Benzel family reunion, held in Hardin from July 6-8.

Sixty-five descendants of Fred and Marie Benzel gathered in Hardin the weekend of July 6-8. Fred and Marie farmed in the Hardin area in the early to mid-20th century, and their grandchildren Steve and Ronnie Benzel and Duane Heitzman continue to work original family farms.

Meals were enjoyed at the Hardin Historic Depot, where grandparents Fred and Marie first arrived in Hardin. A picnic barbecue was held at the lovely museum grounds.

Heitzman gave the relatives a bus tour of Benzel homes, farms and the church that Fred and Marie attended.

Attendees stayed at the Hardin KOA and each one of Hardin’s fine motels. Twenty-five of the 30 living first cousins were in attendance. They came from as far away as Arizona, Idaho, Indiana, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Honored guest was Ruth Benzel, who will be celebrating her 90th birthday this fall. Ruth is a Hardin resident and wife of the late Johnny Benzel.
